Feb 01, 2011 To cut a long story short, I was knocked off my bike at the start of last month by a van driver who turned across a bus lane without looking or indicating. I am fine but the bike has taken a bit of a knock, both shifters are scuffed and battered but there is also a small dent in the top tube.
Jul 19, 2021 In fact, Im not sure what might be the reason. I just looked down and saw this while riding on a sunny day. My bike is always in my room and I live alone. I sit on my top tube from time to time during traffic light waiting. I sometimes descend on top tube. The frame is 23000 KM old. Always by 68-72 KG me. I had crashed before but never hit top ...
: 3The dent is in a low stress part of the frame, but at least 3 or 4 times in my years, Ive seen frames break from a low stress part of the frame being dented. Cracks started from the dent and then without warning, the rider momentarily becomes an occupant of two unicycles.

Some dent-removal tools use frame blocks to compress the tube from the outside. This is a wimpy, ineffective method only used by retrograde, old-school mechanics. After all, the dent is to the inside.. You might stuff a steel rod down a seat tube or head tube, to push the dent out.

I have heard (although never tried) that dry ice can pop dents out of auto body panels, not sure if it would work on a bike frame. Also since aluminum is prone to stress fractures, bending the dent back along the same path it was already dented could seriously weaken that area.

Oct 29, 2021 Is a dent in an aluminum bike frame bad? In the near term its reasonably safe the dent is not sufficiently deep to seriously weaken the tube (though one does need to be concerned about the integrity of the welds on the rest of the bike, given its been in an accident).
Sep 13, 2017 Lastly, yes, the aluminum is very thin, and has been getting thinner as they strive for lighter frames. Still, it was possible to dent and break heavier aluminum frames. I lost an 03 S-Works E-5 to a dent. I went down in a crash, and my bar slammed into the top tube. The frame survived about six more weeks of racing before it cracked.
A small, contained dent in the middle of a bigger tube may never cause you problems. A deeper or wider dent especially in a thinner tube or near a weld will need frequent checks. A bulge (especially on the down tube near a weld) suggests that the bike has been crashed into something and that the frame absorbed the shock.

A few years back there was a failure of a lift tower on Blackcomb from ice jacking. Water got into the tubular tower base froze and damaged it.
Mar 12, 2006 Theres a small nick in the metal, and a very shallow dent, about 2-3 cm long and 1 cm wide, probably only a milimeter or two deep. Ive always read that dented aluminum can fail catastrophically. But the bike feels as solid as ever, even when Im accelerating hard out of the saddle, and the frame isnt cracked or anything.

Dented aluminum frame, bad call to buy? I found a great deal on a 2014 GT fury team, ($1000 USD) but it has a small dent in the side of the top tube. It appears to be small and in a low stress area, but do you guys think it would be a terrible idea to buy? Thanks in advance. Its a
Jul 02, 2021 I have had a crash recently and theres a minor dent at the top tube. The manufacturer (Canyon) is telling me itll take them 8 weeks to make an appointment for me to replace the frame. Apr 15, 2013 Dent repair does NOT work on aluminum; only on steel; and I would not do it to a bicycle. The dent repair is for non-structural (ie car body), not structural frames (bikes). Just ride it. Trek may come through; if not Nashbar has some great options for

Mar 24, 2009 As California L33 said, A downtube is always in tension. Dents in your top tube, or seat stays can cause catastrophic buckling since they are in compression (still highly unlikely), but dents in tubes put into tension are only a concern from a (very) High Cycle Fatigue type mode. Dont sweat it. 1 -

Aug 16, 2011 The top tube is under compression, so it could be a problem. Put your weight on a beer can (you can do it). Then have a friend use a stick to dent the can, it collapses immediately. Depends on the wall thickness, depth of dent, your type of riding, etc etc. Ive had a few bikes with same, and never had a problem. YMMV.

If the dent is within 25% of the tube length, but more than 10cm (4 in) from a join, then I would be using it, but cautiously. If its closer than 10cm from a join then I would get a shop to look at it. I would add that Ive ridden high-end bikes for decades after their first (heart breaking) dents. One of them has just died, but a fork failed ...

Sadly, no. If its a metal frame, which it must be, since carbon would crack and shatter from the same force that causes metal to deform, you would need to get inside the affected tube and push it out from the inside. That would mean destroying the...

Often referred to as the heart of a bike, a frame can be made from either carbon fiber, aluminum, titanium, steel or a combination of these materials. Each bicycle frame material offers a list of differing characteristics that will affect the cost, comfort, weight, stiffness, strength and durability.
Oct 15, 2021 1 Answer1. Show activity on this post. With all frames, that much of a dent increases the risk of a failure eventually. If that were an ultra-light frame with very thin tubes, it might be better to retire that now, but an earlier model Cannondale probably doesnt qualify.
