BS uses aluminum push rods on the rocker arm which is operating the valve involved in compression release. This is NOT for cost reasons. The Intake valve on Intek and the Exhaust valve on V twin Vanguards. Several have used steel as replacement with no apparent problem.

Now if the push rod happened to be the Al one the expansion between the cyl and head would be canceled out by the same expansion of the Al push rod. With the steel push rod the difference in expansion is ~ .002/ over the aforementioned temp rise.

Aug 25, 2012 Next time I get a Briggs engine with a broken aluminum push rod I will do the same as you and use a steel push rod. My original thought as to why Briggs used a steel push rod on the exhaust valve was to handle the extra heat but they denied it and didnt have an explanation as to why they use steel on the exhaust and aluminum on the intake.

Model 31Q777-0466 E1 The UPPER valve guide came loose and caused a bent push rod. i BELIEVE this is the EXHAUST valve (upper). It had an ALUMINUM push rod in it that bent. The intake valve is the lower of the two, should have the aluminum push rod- set to .003. The exhaust to .005. Before making the adjustment, check the rocker studs at the head (bottom) w/ a 10 mm wrench and make sure they are tight. The adjustment is done cold,

Jul 04, 2017 Aug 03, 2018 Fixed the #1 Cylinder exhaust valve guide position without having to remove the head. Have put 6 hours on the machine now and is still running like a clock. Intek V-Twin had bent push rods, one broken in the crank case. Stick with aluminum intake push rods -> save your camshaft should one have a dropped push rod in the future.
